In 2004, Royal Hawaiian Mint commemorated its 30th Anniversary with the unique issue of a six dala set utilizing the Mint’s six “Royal Designs.” The 2004 Ten Dala Set was unique because it featured a dollar sign denomination on the reverse for the first time. While many RHM issues have the “dala” denomination, none had a dollar sign value until 2004.
In addition to the six classic “Royal” designs and the $10 Dala reverse with the Kingdom of Hawaii Royal Coat-of-Arms, the issue was also unique because none of the 50 dalas of each design were ever sold. Bernard gave the 30 complete custom packaged sets to friends when he visited Hawaii in 2004 and the most of the 20 singles of each design were used as tips and give aways when he visited Hawaii. Few of the 2004 Ten Dala issue survive in original mint condition.
