In 1988, the Mint completed the custom order for a “Transportation Token” to Westin Hotels for the exclusive use on The Lagoons at The Westin Kauai on Kauai with the delivery of 5,000 nickel “Hapalua” Tokens that was good for a $12.00 boat tour of 600 acre mega-resort’s Lagoons and its exotic animal covered islands.
The 1988 cupro nickel token was named a Hapalua to distinguish it from the 1987 cupro nickel Hapawalu token. The Hapalua obverse featured a Flying Unicorn, the resort's symbol and the legend "KAUAI LAGOONS". The reverse featured HAPALUA, the hotel name and logo plus the name and location of the resort property. OIP was $12.00.
