A full year before the centennial of the King Kalakaua coinage of 1883, BVNH was already planning to do an outstanding job on the upcoming Centennial Dala. The Kala Dala was created to work out any minting problems for the Mint’s first major 39mm size issue in preparation for minting a fantastic Silver Centennial Dala and the Hawaii Gold Crown of original design. In so doing, quite a collectors' piece was created.
