At his birth in 1728, James Cook had poor prospects of receiving high tributes. His schooling ended at 12. He volunteered for the British navy late and served as a commissioned officer for only ten years.
Yet in those ten years, Captain James Cook discovered the cure for scurvy and lead three great voyages: Twice around the world in the "Endeavour" from 1768 to 1771, covering the entire South Pacific Ocean, charted every major landfall and spoke Polynesian.
In 1776, Cook returned to the Pacific Ocean in the Resolution on his third volurage and discovered The Hawaiian Islands on January 20, 1778.
