Of course, Hawaii is known for its beaches. So one day when BVNH, Telle and their two boys were at Hapuna Beach, just makai from Waimea, BVNH was inspired to make a coin in the sand. And the “sand dala” quickly became a new “give away” for Mint visitors. Over time it was used as a token for $1.00 and had a huge dollar sign on it. The Sand Dala was minted with a variety of die combinations and muled with several dies over the years.
The classic Hawaiian Sand Dala features THE HAWAIIAN MINT with the dollar sign on the obverse and the Big Island on the reverse.
