Charles Reed Bishop was honored as the man most responsible for the founding of Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate.* The Bishop Coin completed the Bishop Estate Centennial Set of three coins, dated 1986, 1987 and 1988
As Bernice Pauahi Bishop's husband, Mr. Bishop organized Bernice’s will that founded Kamehameha Schools and Bishop Estate. He also founded Bishop & Co., the first chartered bank in the Kingdom and the second oldest bank west of the Rocky Mountains. Today it is the First Hawaiian Bank. He financed the first electric company, the telephone company and much of the development that is still dominant in Honolulu today.
The third in a series of three commemorative coins, was observed with a special ceremony held at the Royal Hawaiian Mint. The Charles Reed Bishop coin completes the three-year celebration that included the Bernice Pauahi Bishop three coin set and the Kamehameha three coin set that commemorated the centennial of Kamehameha Schools & Bishop Estate just as Papa Lyman wished.
The obverse features Charles Reed Bishop "Hawaii’s forgotten man," the Estate/School name, anniversary dedication and School motto: IMUA (FORWARD!) The reverse features Bishop Hall, the Schools' first building that was built by Mr. Bishop.
The Limited Numbered Edition of gold and silver coins each weigh a one ounce of .999 fine gold or silver in the full 39mm Dala size. The original issue of the Bishop coin was $950 for gold, $39 for silver and $15 for bronze. Each coin was packaged in a custom booklet with a certificate of authenticity and story by Dr. Mitchell.
* Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate, founded in 1887 by the estate of Bernice Pauahi Bishop, is rooted in the aina (land) - the heart of Hawaiian life. Since its founding, this "State Treasure" has grown dramatically and today is Hawaii's largest land owner whose educational programs and rich traditions touch the lives of thousands of individuals in Hawaii.
